Scalp micropigmentation is a technique used to introduce tiny amounts of pigment within the dermal layer of the epidermis to correct and better the aesthetics of a bald scalp.

Scalp micropigmentation is a technique used to introduce tiny amounts of pigment within the dermal layer of the epidermis to correct and better the aesthetics of a bald scalp.

The technique was first developped as an aesthetic treatment used for men suffering from any type of hair loss and as a medical therapy performed to conceal existing scars, burns or birthmarks.

To perform the scalp micropigmentation technique many different pigments are selected. They need to meet the specific characteristics of the patient like: his/her hair and skin color, skin elasticity and profiles. This very sophisticated technique combines the depth, the angles, the size and color of the pigments to get the best and most natural results.

Scalp pigmentation is a good alternative to the more traditionnal hair transplant surgery, hair prostheses, wigs, lotions or medications often used to slow down the hair loss processes.

The realistic appearance of normal shaven hair is obtained with the deposit of pigments under the skin. No surgery is needed and the quality-price ratio is excellent when compared to other alternatives like hair transplants or the continuous use of other products.

Scalp micropigmentation is different from a normal tattoo because it affects a distinct skin layer, and because the instruments, the pigment itself and the needles used are different.

These aspects allow micropigmentation to evolve over time and short touch-up sessions are sometimes necessary.

Scalp micropigmentation replicates, in a detailed and exhaustive way, the presence of real hair follicles and micro hair.

Up to 2 to 4 sessions, lasting a few hours each, are necessary to get optimum results and a 7 days lapse of time is necessary between these sessions. Final number of sessions differ from one patient to another and depend on factors like bleeding, scalp characteristics, extent of the alopecia…

Before the first session starts, a frontal line is designed and different options are marked with a pencil to match the patient’s facial proportions. A very personal and exclusive result is obtained with natural and individualized looks.

Once the frontal line has been drawn, the first session starts.

  • Hydration of the scalp. When patient skin is dry, we advise our patients to hydrate their scalp before the first session is performed. Maintenance of the best skin conditions to prevent any alterations after the treatment, is vital.
  • No seafood is allowed two to three days before the procedure to avoid any possible skin allergies.
  • No alcohol or aspirine (salicylic acid) is allowed 24 hours before the procedure. And more generally, no vasodilator is allowed because a micro-haemorrage could hinder the work performed by the specialist during the procedure.
  • No coffee, tea, Coca-Cola or any other caffeine drinks are allowed 24 hours before the procedure.

We always ask our patients to have a light meal before the session starts.

Though this procedure does not require any particular after care, we highly recommend to follow these advice to augment the efficiency of the treatment and to prevent any future side effects:

  • No direct sunlight or UV rays on the treated areas during a month after the procedure because the pigment could then change color.
  • Use a sunblock protection when having some kind of sun exposure
  • Only use gentle scrubs and creams. Do not rub or scatch the area.
  • Keep the area dry and avoid any possible sweating. No sporting activities are allowed during 5 days after the treatment.
  • Use pure vaseline to protect the scalp and apply several times a day.
  • No cosmetic product is allowed on the treated area when not prescribed by the specialist
  • No seafood after the procedure during 2 to 3 days

No Glycolic acid products on the pigmented scalp allowed because they could alter the color or delete completely the pigmentation.

Historical facts– Micropigmentation or permanent makeup were first used in Asia, in Hong Kong and Taïwan most of all. The procedure was afterwards modified in China and Japan. The difference between tattoo and the micropigmentation is that tattoo affects the inner layer of the skin (dermis layer) and that the colours used cannot be removed.

Length of the treatment– The pigment used to perform the micropigmentation is inserted at 0,07mm below the skin so that the colour can be removed. The length of the treatment may vary according to factors like the after care, characteristics of the skin, sun exposure, etc… About 70% of our patients ask for a touch-up session after 2 years to get darker dots since the pigmentation tends to fade away, not to disappear completely.
